There’s a fact about Mount Everest that has always stayed with me. Almost nobody dies on the way up. They die on the way down.

The climb is what everyone trains for. You have fresh legs, a full tank, and a whole industry of guides who specialize in getting you to the top. The summit is the photo — it’s the moment everyone pictures when they imagine the mountain. The descent is different. You’re tired. The weather has turned. The oxygen that got you up is running thin. And the skills that carried you to the top are not the skills that get you safely back down.

Retirement works exactly the same way. We just refuse to talk about it that way.

We treat retirement as a finish line — the party, the cake, the “congratulations, you made it.” A summit. But reaching the top of that mountain, saving the money, was never the dangerous part. The dangerous part is the descent: turning the pile you built into income that survives a bad market, decades of inflation, a tax code waiting to take its share, a life longer than you planned for, and the loss of a spouse. That is where retirements are actually won or lost. And it’s the part almost no plan ever addresses.

A generation handed no map

Here’s what makes this the defining money challenge of our time. Your parents very likely had a pension — a guide roped to them the whole way down, income that showed up for life no matter what. Your generation is the first in modern history to be handed a 401(k) instead and told, in effect, “you figure out the descent yourself.” The standard advice for that descent is “keep it invested and withdraw a little each year.” That isn’t a plan for getting down a mountain. That’s hoping the weather holds.

The dread has a reason

And people feel it — not as a spreadsheet problem, but as a low hum of unease. The market drops and it lands in your stomach in a way it never did when you were younger. You’re not quite sure how much you’re allowed to spend. You did everything right and you still feel exposed, and you can’t fully explain why.

That feeling isn’t irrational. It’s the accurate sense that you’re standing at the top of a mountain that nobody planned the way down.

Reading the descent

I came to this work from an unusual place — years in fitness, and a master’s in exercise science, a field where you’re not allowed to hold an opinion without the research behind it. When I moved into finance, I was stunned that the descent — the hardest, highest-stakes part of the whole climb — was being improvised. So we built our firm around it.

We read your descent the way a guide reads a mountain: every risk between you and the bottom, measured on your actual numbers, not a rule of thumb. Then we show you two routes down — your current plan and an optimal one — side by side, with the real math, and you choose the line. Sometimes the safest route is the one you’re already on, and when that’s true, we say so.

The summit was never the goal

You spent decades climbing. That was the hard part, and you did it. But no one guides themselves down a mountain like this — not safely, not alone.

If you want a clear read on your own descent before you take a step you can’t take back, we do something called a Retirement Second Opinion. A reading, not a pitch. You’ll leave knowing exactly where the safe line down is — whether or not you ever work with us.

Reaching the summit was only ever half the climb. Getting down the other side, with everything you built intact and income for as long as you both live, is the rest. Let’s plan it.
